On June 19, 2009, Sotheby’s will present a selection of color-plate books, atlases, cartography, and natural history watercolors from the collection of Graham Arader. Items to be presented will be on public view June 13 – 18, 2009. Graham Arader has been collecting symbols of American and European history for 40 years. Items to be auctioned include:

  • Paintings by marine artist Robert Dodd
  • The first complete edition of Atlas Maior by Johannes Blaeu
  • The second edition of The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands by Mark Catesby
  • Watercolor paintings by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues
  • Nineteen watercolors on vellum by Pierre Joseph Redouté
  • Prints from The Birds of America and Quadrupeds by John James Audubon
  • Unpublished original watercolors by John Abbot (Birds of Georgia and the Surrounding Region)

The Art of Botanical Illustration Exhibition
October 8, 2009 – November 14, 2009
An Exhibition at The Rye Arts Center featuring the work of Students, faculty & alumni of the Botanical Art and Illustration Program of the New York Botanical Garden.

Eligibility: Students, faculty & alumni of the Botanical Art and Illustration Program of the New York Botanical Garden.

Subject: Botanical and natural science themes.

Media: All original two dimensional work is acceptable. No size limitation.

Submissions: Please submit your high resolution images (300dpi) in jpeg format, with image being no larger than 8×10”. A maximum of three images per artist will be accepted. Mail CD to Attn:

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2009

Presentation: All works must be exhibition-ready (i.e. framed in a simple, appropriate manner and wired for hanging) in order to be accepted by RAC.

Notification: Artists will be notified by September 12th of the jury’s decision.

Sale of Work: If your work is for sale, RAC receives 30% of the sale price. Artwork may not be removed until the close of the exhibition. Only juried pieces will be displayed. Pricing should include frame.

Awards: Best in Show and Honorable Mentions will be designated.

Juried: This is a juried exhibition; only professional quality work will be accepted.

Entry Fee: $25.00, Please make check payable to The Rye Arts Center. The entry fee is non-refundable.

Jurors: Professional representatives from RAC & NYBG will jury entries for botanical and technical accuracy and artistic merit.

Opening & Reception: A reception will be held at the Rye Arts Center, Thursday, October 8th, 2009 at 6:30-8:30 pm

  • Introduction to the Willows of California (SALICACEAE) – June 13
    This workshop is in danger of being canceled because of low enrollment. This class will be canceled by the close of business next Monday if enrollment remains low. Please send in your registration right away, and let the Gateway museum office know that it is in the mail so we can count you at COB Monday if your registration hasn’t arrived yet (gateway@csuchico.edu or (530) 898-3511). Only paid registrations can count towards the minimum enrollment.
