With much excitement and enthusiasm, artist Wendy Hollender announced, “We bought the farm!”

Hollengold Farm is a family effort. This family-operated farm is located in Accord, NY and provides Ulster County with organic vegetables, herbs, flowers, and fruit. It also provides botanical artists with inspiring new learning opportunities, thanks to Wendy. Wendy, the founder of DrawingInColor.com, has announced she will be teaching a workshop at the farm next month. The details for this new botanical illustration course are listed below.

  • Botanical Illustration – July 17 and July 18. Wendy Hollender announces new workshops at Hollengold Farm. Workshops are 10 AM – 4 PM. Lunch is included and will feature the fresh organic produce grown on the farm. Lunch will be prepared by the farm’s own chef. One-day or two-day workshop options are available. The one-day workshop includes lunch and costs $90. The two-day workshop includes two lunches and costs $165. To register, contact Wendy Hollender.

The conference website for the 15th Annual Meeting & Conference of the American Society of Botanical Artists is now live!

Hosting the conference this year are the dedicated members of the Southwest Society of Botanical Artists. Conference activities will be held at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, AZ. Conference participants will have the opportunity to learn from both international and U.S. instructors. This year the ASBA is hosting pre- and post-conference classes with internationally renowned artists. Jean Emmons will discuss the mystery of color. Kate Nessler will lead a class on how to paint on vellum, and Lizzie Sanders will demonstrate how to create surface textures and detail using dry brush techniques.

The conference will be held October 15 – 17, 2009. A wonderful selection of 54 learning opportunities have been planned. Conference activities include tours at the Desert Botanical Garden, workshops addressing the business of art, a field trip to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, and a plethora of botanical illustration workshops. A former overgrown wasteland that has been transformed into an informal garden in the countryside. The garden’s Tea Room offers light lunches, sweet treats, tea, and coffee.

  • Drawing & Painting Flowers in Line with Watercolour – October 3, 2009. Draw and paint freely while being aware of the structure and habits of plants. Participants will use pencils, pens, and watercolour.
  • Botanical Art: Watercolour Painting Workshop for Beginners – October 16, 2009. Participants will work on flower drawings and tracings provided by the instructor. They will then learn the steps necessary to create a botanical watercolor painting.
