Quinn is an artist, a musician, and a recent graduate of the Natural Science Illustration Program at the University of Washington. His specialties include wild cats, raptors, wild edible plants, and medicinal plants. His chosen media are graphite, watercolor, gouache, colored pencil, and photography.

  • Botanical Illustration
    Tuesdays, January 11 – March 1, 2011; 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM.
    Learn botanical illustration from naturalist and artist, Quinn Fitzpatrick. Draw and paint Northwest flora while learning classification and identification. Work in graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil or watercolor. Make your own cards, floral prints or scientific plates. Students will complete this course with a wall-ready depiction of their favorite flower. Some drawing experience is helpful. All skill levels are welcome. Connecticut Natural Science Illustrators LLC is comprised of professional artists and scientists who have developed educational programs in natural science illustration. The members of CTNSI also provide illustrations, printed material, murals and exhibits addressing environmental and biological topics.   • Pen & Ink I: Basic Techniques – Wednesdays, April 13 – May 4, 2011;
    1 – 4 PM. Master techniques used in scientific illustration using crow quill and technical pens. Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Natural Science Illustration or permission of instructor. Cost: $275
  • Pen & Ink II: Natural Science Specimens – Wednesdays,
    May 11 – June 1; 1 – 4 PM. Illustrate subjects from the Peabody’s museum collection. Create a note card or business card using the completed image. Prerequisite: Pen & Ink I or permission of instructor. Cost: $140.
  • Natural Science Illustration in Mixed Media – Wednesdays,
    April 13 – June 1, 2010; 1 – 4 PM. Capture birds, plants, reptiles, and other wildlife on paper with scientific accuracy. Learn how to combine different media so that they are suitable for publication. Previous experience helpful. Completion of Fundamentals of Natural Science Illustration is recommended. Cost: $275
  • Drawing and Painting Birds – Saturdays, April 16 to June 4, 2011;
    10 AM – 1 PM. Avian anatomy, field sketching, and drawing from mounted specimens and skins are the focus of this class. Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Natural Science Illustration. Cost: $275

  • Botanical Drawing: A Winter Garden –  Thursdays, January 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10, 17, 2011 (6 weeks); 2 – 5 PM. Draw and paint coastal cool-season plants working from live specimens of camellias, day lilies, winter jasmine and the many heirloom vegetable plants that thrive in Alabama’s cold months.  Use traditional scientific drawing techniques to create realistic botanicals in pencil, ink, colored pencil and gouache. No experience necessary, all art supplies provided. Cost: $140. Payment may be made by check or credit card, and must be received to hold a place in class. For information, email Val Webb.
  • Sketching Birds of the Gulf Coast – Saturday, January 22, 2011;
    9 AM – 4 PM. 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center. Spanish Fort, AL. Learn to make fast, accurate sketches of coastal bird species in graphite and colored pencil. Practice traditional scientific illustration techniques in a relaxed, encouraging setting. No previous art experience necessary… you’ll be amazed by what you can create! All supplies and instructional materials are provided by the instructor and are included in the cost. Coffee, assorted juices and fresh muffins will be provided during the morning. Pack your lunch, and we’ll take our midday break on the deck overlooking the beautiful Mobile delta. Cost: $45. Class size is limited and this workshop usually fills up quickly. “The Art of Seeing” – A Botanical Art Exhibition at Brookside Gardens

The Art of Seeing

The botanical paintings and illuminations of 20 area artists will be displayed at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton, Maryland. The artists, all members of the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region, have exquisitely painted selected subjects from the natural world. Orchids, peonies, flowering vines and arrays of spring bulbs will adorn the airy viewing spaces of the Visitor Center, along with trees, herbs, fruits, vegetables and the occasional butterfly or moth. All paintings are for sale and are portrayed in watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, or gouache, an opaque watercolor medium. The artwork chosen to represent this year’s show is Joan Ducore’s beautiful Rosa x floribunda ‘Betty Boop.’ Joan holds a certificate in botanical art from the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration.

The Botanical Art Society of the National Capital Region is an active organization of talented botanical artists. Incorporated as a non-profit in 2008, BASNCR serves over 90 members, the majority of whom live in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Many of its members also belong to the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), the premier botanical art association in the United States. Nineteen of the 20 artists exhibiting in the Art of Seeing show are also members of the ASBA.

BASNCR is open to all artists and other individuals interested in furthering the advancement and appreciation of botanical art. Botanical artists from student level to proficiency are welcomed and nurtured through education, community outreach, field trips and special projects. BASNCR members regularly participate in outreach activities to educate the public about the beauty and relevance of contemporary botanical art, while encouraging appreciation of our natural world. Over the past years, BASNCR members have contributed to the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Brookside Gardens, and donated detailed paintings of selected specimens in the gardens in honor of Brookside’s 40th year anniversary celebration.

Art of Seeing will be on display at the Brookside Gardens Visitor Center from December 5, 2010 through February 6, 2011. The Visitor Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is located at 1800 Glenallan Rd, Wheaton, MD 20902.

The press and public are welcome to attend the Opening Reception with the artists on Saturday, December 11, from 12-2 p.m. in the Visitors Center at Brookside Gardens.
