Gardens, Plants, Art

See what’s new!

This weekend ArtPlantae will take part in the First Annual Holiday Party at Aurea Vista, Riverside’s newest shopping destination. The holidays aren’t the only thing to celebrate this weekend, however.

ArtPlantae is celebrating the launch of a new plant-based education section featuring resources for children, parents, and teachers. Dedicated specifically to botany and botanical art education, this section features curriculum by the National Gardening Association, children’s books about plants (in English, Spanish and many under $10!), instructional books about drawing and botanical art, plant identification guides, and the Colorful Edibles coloring book published by the American Society of Botanical Artists.

Discover more this Saturday during the holiday party. The festivities begin at
4:00 PM and continue until 9:00 PM. Meet local artists and designers and finish your holiday shopping too. Visit ArtPlantae’s new area about plant-based education and receive a free gift. It is located downstairs across from the children’s boutique.

Stop by on your way to the Festival of Lights and the Artists Collective located just down the street on the Main Street Pedestrian Mall.

Free gifts available while supplies last.

According to professors Shaaron Ainsworth, Vaughan Prain and Russell Tytler, this is what makes drawing an effective learning tool.

They offer their thoughts on the subject in Drawing to Learn in Science, a paper in which they make the case that drawing circumvents the passive learning often observed in science classrooms. Their position on this topic can be summed up simply — instead of leaving students to interpret the drawings of others, have them create their own (Ainsworth et al., 2011).

The authors offer five suggestions as to why drawing makes a good learning tool. What follows is a very brief summary of the arguments Ainsworth et al. (2011) make in their paper.

    Drawing Encourages Engagement
Passive learning can be diverted when drawing is used alongside reading and writing in the classroom. To draw means to explore and to understand.

    Drawing Deepens Understanding

Drawing also develops visual literacy skills and provides real-time experience documenting observations.

    Drawing Develops Reasoning Skills

Planning a drawing requires thinking through content and learning to reason in different ways.

Drawing is a Good Learning Strategy

Drawing is a good way to work through confusing information and transform student understanding into an observable medium.

    Drawing Makes Knowledge Public

When knowledge becomes public, it can be shared and discussed with others.

Ainsworth et al. (2011) continue making their case for drawing in the sciences by highlighting programs that are actively researching the effectiveness of drawing in the classroom.

Drawing to Learn in Science can be purchased online for $20 or obtained by visiting your local college library.

When we last spoke with botanical artist Anna Knights in August 2011, there was a lot of conversation about online classes, specifically learning botanical art from Anna through this medium. I am happy to help Anna announce that she will launch a new online learning community next year.

Botanical Painting: An Online Workshop with Anna Knights will be a free-to-join online community for people at all levels of experience. This new workshop will begin next summer.

Community members will have their own profile pages and have access to a discussion forum, video demonstrations and written tips from Anna. Members will be able to learn at their own pace through the completion of special projects. These projects will be available for purchase through the program’s website. Personalized one-on-one instruction from Anna will be available at an additional cost.

To learn more about this exciting new learning opportunity,
