Denver Botanic Gardens adds satellite classes to distance learning program

Five years ago the Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) announced its distance learning program in botanical art and illustration. Their unique format combines long-distance learning via computer with live classes at the Gardens.

This year the DBG program will expand its reach to include classes that will be taught in Arlington, VA. This exciting move is in response to many requests the program has received from people in this area.

Classes will be taught at Gallery Underground at The Shops at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, VA.

Gallery Underground will host the following three-day classes:

Make drawing a habit

She is the author of Botanical Drawing in Color: A Basic Guide to Mastering Realistic Form and Naturalistic Color and Botanical Drawing: A Beginner’s Guide. She is the co-owner of Botanical Arts Press, LLC and the co-creator of a wildly successful crowdfunding campaign. Wendy has years of experience introducing botanical illustration to new audiences. The meditative and relaxing effects of observing and drawing nature have long been known. Making it a part of your life practice, however, has always been a challenge and it seems to get worse with every technological advancement and with every holiday release of a new gadget.

So how can you slow things down a bit?

Consider Wendy’s new subscription program A Year of Botanical Drawing. Announced only two days ago, Wendy’s one-year program provides students with the structure and support to learn botanical illustration, to develop their new skills and to make drawing a life-fulfilling habit. Enrollment is now open. The program begins in January 2016.

When registering for this program, students can choose between two options. For Option One, students receive a printed hard copy lesson with an easel-style binder in the mail each month. This easel-style binder keeps the current lesson propped up while working. For Option Two, students receive their monthly lesson as a PDF document. The only difference between the two options has to do with the format in which students receive their lessons. Other than this, both options include the following:

  • Online monthly instructional video
  • Mid-month online group meeting with interactive features allowing for group participation and the review of student drawings.
  • A private page for students enrolled in the program. This page features the current lesson, instructional video and a place for students to communicate with each other and with Wendy.
  • Private image and comment sharing with Wendy.

    Session I includes basic drawing skills that are the background to any and all illustration. Learn Traditional Botanical Art on Your Mobile Device

Botanical art tradition, 21st century technology

It has only been three years since Elaine Searle launched her first online course. Her course has grown since then thanks to student feedback and advances in technology.

Elaine has combined this feedback and today’s technology to create a new online program celebrating the traditions of botanical art, as well as the tools of technology. This 21st-century program has new content, new video and new interactive elements. It also includes personal tutorials via Skype.

Elaine offers three levels of instruction in the new program. These levels are outlined briefly below:

  • Foundation – Suitable for those with no or little experience of drawing or painting, and for those who wish to build confidence and proficiency in the core skills of botanical art.
  • Certificate – Suitable for those who have already mastered the foundations of botanical art and would like to study to a more advanced level.
  • Diploma – An opportunity for certificate level graduates to build on their knowledge and skills to attain a diploma via the successful production of a significant themed collection of botanical paintings.

Enrollment is now open for all levels.

The Foundation course begins in January 2015. Students should be able to complete this course in 12 months. Fee includes a kit of brushes, paint, art materials and papers.

The Certificate course begins in April 2015. Students should be able to complete this course in 12-18 months.

If you are interested in the Diploma course, please contact Elaine. The portfolio of works required for this course should be completed within 18 months.
