ArtPlantae is excited to participate as a national partner in National Environmental Education Week (EE Week). Blending the theme for EE Week (Be Water and Energy Wise) with botany and botanical art education has been a rewarding experience. So many people have given their time to participate in the event. There will be so much to learn!

Here is a hint of what is to come during EE Week at ArtPlantae:

  • Learn how one city involves its residents in water conservation activities and how both the city and residents teach others about the importance of water conservation.
  • Learn how an illustrator partnered with habitat restoration experts to restore habitat and create an illustration garden.
  • Does your school have a schoolyard garden? You’ll want to know about this practical tool.
  • Learn how a rain garden benefits the ocean and connects people with plants and their food.
  • Read how a natural science educator created a series of books about ecosystems.
  • Teachers, have you been looking for a way to incorporate nature drawing into your lesson plans? There are workbooks you’ll want to see!
  • Learn how an illustrator has created a venue to teach botany and botanical art from the ground, up.

EE Week is just around the corner!

On March 11th, ArtPlantae will participate in the 2nd Annual WaterMiser Workshop hosted by the City of Newport Beach. This successful event is for Newport Beach residents and brings awareness to water conservation issues facing not only the local community, but the global community as well. Presentations and practical how-to instruction are the foundations of this event.

This year, the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California and ArtPlantae will be in the Exhibitors Courtyard to bring special attention to the plants in our world. Cards, prints, and books will be available for purchase.

Visitors to the Exhibitors Courtyard will also be able to learn wonderful new skills such as how to harvest rainwater, how to wash a car without water, and how to create a water-wise landscape.

Hope to see you next week!

In keeping with the theme of the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, Passport To The World, the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators (PSBI) has chosen to showcase paintings of plants introduced to the U.S from the far corners of the world by plant hunting expeditions throughout history. This exhibition will be on view February 28 – March 7, 2010.

A little known fact is that illustrators have always been important members of plant expeditions. What surprises many is the fact that many of these early botanical artists, who traveled to some of the most remote and uncivilized places on earth were women! While botanical illustration is by no means an exclusively female occupation, the PSBI would like to dispel the myth that it is a mere “hobby” for the pampered housewife. Botanical artists are still valued today on plant hunting expeditions to illustrate specimens in an accurate and detailed manner that even the most sophisticated camera cannot capture. Our members will educate the public to both the history and techniques of botanical illustration both through continuing demonstrations at our exhibit and an informative brochure describing the role of the botanical artist through history. This year the society will donate a portion of sales of paintings to the Philadelphia-area Living Beyond Breast Cancer organization. This is a cause that is dear to the hearts of many of our members and their families. It’s almost impossible to find someone who hasn’t be touched by this horrific disease on some way.
