ArtPlantae is entering a new era of growth and will begin a new publishing schedule this week. This site will now be updated on Monday and Thursday. The information published on Thursdays will be dedicated to content and announcements specific to ArtPlantae’s educational objectives. Monday mornings will continue to be about fantastic workshops, events, and activities happening worldwide.

By now, it is hoped you understand you have a standing invitation to share information about your classes and announce your participation in special exhibits and other activities with people who share your interests in plants and botanical art. Classes and news are listed free of charge. If you do not receive a response to your email within 48 hours, please resend your message. Even though the spam folders are checked regularly, sometimes the occasional message vanishes into thin air.

Thank you for your continued interest in ArtPlantae and for your continued support of this growing community of artists, naturalists, and educators.

The following information was forwarded by a reader. Here is information about a tax workshop as it was posted on the pasculture public email list at PasadenaCulture.net.


Tax Tips Specifically for Artists

This timely three-hour workshop provides important information for anyone who is self-employed, but is especially geared towards artists, writers, performers, and dancers. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to: being an employee vs. being self-employed, having a Hobby vs. having a Business, how to keep records to protect yourself in case of an audit, the difference between expenses for employees an those for self-employed people, understanding self-employment taxes and taking advantage of various deductions including entertainment, research, automobile and other expenses unique to artists.

Everyone attending will be provided with a wealth of information to take with them, including some guidelines on how to keep good records and a listing of current websites that are resources for those in business for themselves. PLEASE NOTE: This class does not cover tax issues for non-profit organizations.

Stephen Benjamin, a CPA whose clients include actors, writers, artists and other people in the entertainment industry, will teach this class. Mr. Benjamin is also an entertainer in his own right and makes the workshop fun as well as informative. He even has prizes to give out to some lucky attendees!

Sally Jacobs and fellow artists of The Artists’ Gallery co-op will host The Best of TAG 2010 group show at their new gallery located at Bergamot Station, an eight-acre art and cultural center in Santa Monica, CA.

View the work of all TAG artists at the group’s online gallery.

The Best of TAG 2010 will be held January 5 – 30, 2010. An evening reception is planned for Saturday, January 9, 2010, from 5 pm – 8 pm.

Juror, Wendy Hollender, has announced a new exhibition for 2010. The Smithtown Township Arts Council will host Of A Botanical Nature, an exhibition celebrating the unique beauty of plants. This event is scheduled for May 1-28, 2010 at the Mills Pond House Gallery. All artists age 18 and older are eligible to submit artwork for consideration. All media will be considered except photography and computer generated art. Artwork may be realistic or representational and must feature plants or some aspect of plant development such as seed pods, leaves, fruits, and flowers. Entry deadline is March 19, 2010.
