Natural history exhibitions at Adkins Arboretum

Adkins Arboretum brings attention to the art of nature in their ongoing series celebrating regional artists and their exploration of natural themes.

The Arboretum is currently hosting an exhibition of work by Rebecca Clark whose work in Finite and Alive: New Drawings focuses on the wildlife of Chesapeake Bay.

The Arboretum explains that Clark’s drawings of oysters, animals and birds are drawn absent of any background. Their isolation on white paper emphasizes the rich textures and forms of their shells, fur or feathers and the pure sense of aliveness of each one. It also isolates them from the rest of nature. They go on to explain that by “surrounding these creatures with empty space, Clark creates an underlying tension. The creatures she depicts are imperiled, cut off from the environments that created and sustained them. In doing this, she intimates not only the effects of pollution, habitat loss and climate change on individual species but, even more significantly, the loss of human consciousness of our intimate connections with the delicate balance of life on earth.”

An artist all her life, Clark credits Leslie Exton of the botanical illustration program at Corcoran College of Art with helping her learn to draw. She says that Exton “taught us very particular techniques and it opened up a whole new world for me.”

Food, Wine & Botanical Art Too

It’s May and this means it’s time for Primavera in the Garden, Riverside’s popular food and wine event. Held each year at the 40-acre botanical garden on the campus of UC Riverside, a portion of the proceeds supports UCR Botanic Gardens and its staff.

Enjoy a Spring afternoon in the garden, discover plein air art, learn about botanical art, and enjoy wonderful pairings of food and wine. Tickets are available online before the event for $65 each and will be available at the gate on the day of the event for $75 each. A tram will bring visitors from the parking lot to the garden. Tram service is free. University parking costs $5.

I would like to personally thank the following local businesses for their help in bringing attention to Primavera. They allowed me to place posters or bookmarks at their store or restaurant. Their support is appreciated.

A Different Look at Botanical Art in Black & White

Do you love the look and feel of botanical illustrations created in graphite?

If so, you will be mesmerized by the botanical imagery of
Cy DeCosse whose studio focuses on the alternative photographic printing processes of Platinum-Palladium, Gum Dichromate, and Photogravure. These are special, extremely time- and labor-intensive techniques that took DeCosse and master printer, Keith Taylor, years to perfect. The images they create together at Cy DeCosse Photography contain fascinating detail, delicate light and dark tones and botanical subjects that float on paper.

DeCosse’s portfolio includes 11 themed collections. The following collections may be of particular interest to botanical artists: Midnight Garden, The Color of Food, The Beauty of Food in Platinum, Flowers in Platinum and Weeds.

In May, the VERVE Gallery of Photography in Santa Fe, New Mexico will present a solo exhibition of The Midnight Garden, DeCosse’s collection of night-blooming flowers printed in platinum. This exhibition will be on view May 2 – June 21, 2014.

Communicating Science, Technology, Innovation and Art in Arizona

Hundreds of Arizona’s business, science and education leaders will gather in Scottsdale for the Second Annual Arizona SciTech Festival Kickoff Conference on September 4, 2013. The conference will be held 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts located at 7380 E. Second Street (map). The free, day-long event is open to those wanting to learn more about integrating STEM education into their communities. STEM education, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math, is the backbone discipline of Arizona’s new economy.

The Arizona SciTech Festival Kickoff Conference will include 16 thought-provoking panel discussions, a keynote address and roughly 50 interactive stations, where collaborating organizations from the Arizona SciTech Festival will demonstrate STEM activities. The conference offers a unique opportunity to network with some of the state’s top STEM professionals, learn best practices in communicating STEM, as well as strategies to engage communities, local schools and businesses.

“The conference is an intersection point for leaders to form partnerships and build upon STEM activities they can implement in their communities during our annual spring festival,” said Jeremy Babendure, Executive Director of the Arizona SciTech Festival. “It offers a platform to engage new collaborators and links content providers with venues throughout the state, which translates into a stronger network and a more impactful Arizona SciTech Festival.”

“A statewide commitment to STEM education is critical to developing an ongoing pipeline of future talent to build and sustain Arizona’s workforce and strengthen its economy,” said Sandra Watson, President and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority, who is a panelist at this year’s conference. “Bringing the private and public sectors together in this forum to collaborate and lead on this issue is vital for our state’s success and global competitiveness.”

Conference sponsors include Cox Communications, Challenger Space Center, the City of Scottsdale and EventInterface.

The Kickoff Conference begins with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast mixer. Programming begins at 8:30 a.m. and continues until 6 p.m. The conference keynote presentation beginning at 3:45 p.m. will feature Geoff Notkin, star of TV’s “Meteorite Men” and Skylab Astronaut Dr. Ed Gibson. Notkin and Gibson will team up to provide unique perspectives on how they’ve worked to make the understanding and appreciation of science part of mainstream living.
