What began in 2006 with a preliminary call for entries to the membership of the American Society of Botanical Artists is culminating in the final showing of Losing Paradise? Endangered Plants Here and Around the World, a botanical art exhibition in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew in England. The exhibition opened this past weekend and is one of the integral elements of a larger exhibition, Plants in Peril.

The exhibition is comprised of a collection of 44 works of original art depicting threatened and endangered plants from North & South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.

Botanical artists, some of whom had depicted only garden varieties of familiar flowers, set out to increase public awareness about plants threatened with extinction. They learned of the various organizations that assess the conservation status of endangered plant species such as the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s oldest and largest global environmental network which produces the Red List of Threatened Species, NatureServe which produces conservation status assessments in the U.S. and Canada, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service which administers the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Artists formed collaborations with local scientists, conservation organizations, and botanical gardens that could provide guidance in locating and studying the plants whether they be in public collections or in the wild.

A catalog of the exhibition including images of the artwork, background information about each plant and the artists depicting them, as well as essays by leading plant scientists and conservationists, is available for sale at ArtPlantae Books.

PRESS RELEASE

Independent Bookstore ArtPlantae Books Selling Google eBooks™: “Cloud-Based” Library and Multi-Device Access Allow Indies to Compete in Growing eBook Business

June 8, 2011 – Customers and subscribers of ArtPlantae in Riverside, CA no longer have to choose between reading digital and supporting independent bookstores – ArtPlantae Books is now selling Google eBooks™ online. Google launched its e-book program on Monday, December 6, 2010, and is partnering with the American Booksellers Association so indie bookstores can provide an easy way for their customers to discover, read, and buy e-books at competitive prices.

“More and more consumers are buying e-readers and are looking to purchase e-books,” said ArtPlantae director, Tania Marien. “Google eBooks now allows us to remain the store of choice for our audience of teachers, artists and naturalists who are reading digital and utilizing technology in their classrooms and educational programs.”

“This partnership with Google allows independent bookstores that are our members to better compete with corporate retailers on selection, price, and convenience,” said ABA President Michael Tucker. “It levels the playing field.”

A Google eBook is a new form of cloud-based digital book that allows readers to access their libraries on almost any device from one single repository, regardless of where the e-book was purchased. Google is offering hundreds of thousands of titles for sale, ranging from new releases and bestsellers in every category to classics in the public domain.

Because Google eBooks work with myriad devices — tablets, smartphones, computers, even most e-ink devices — consumers are free to shop from a variety of retailers rather than being bound to one retailer. This opens up a wealth of indie recommendations and bestsellers to avid e-book readers.

In addition to e-books, readers can search through a database of five million titles of print books at ArtPlantae Books, peruse bestsellers, the Indie Next List, and a curated collection of resources about plants, botanical art, environmental education and natural history.

Mindy has traveled to Costa Rica every year for the past 25 years. In 1999, Mindy and photographer Nancy Richmond began leading art and photography tours to Costa Rica. They teach artists how to take research photographs to compliment their field sketches and create accurate color swatches in their sketchbooks. Photographers work on creating compositions that are pictorial essays of the rainforest. Workshop participants visit biological research stations, get a behind-the-scenes look at a sloth sanctuary and learn about on-going conservation efforts in Costa Rica.

The next painting and photography tour is February 1-10, 2012. A quick summary is posted below. This information has also been posted in the Classes Near You sections for Costa Rica and Florida.

FIVE: a sensory garden
May 26 – June 19, 2011
SPARK gallery, Denver, CO

Botanical artist, Susan Rubin, will share her contemporary view of botanical art in an exhibition about plants, people, and the five senses.

As Susan explains in her statement for FIVE:

In an ongoing exploration of the relationship between people and plants, this group of drawings takes a closer look at the five senses and the way we experience our environment.

As babies, we touch and taste everything we see. As adults, we respond immediately to familiar sensations and make fast judgments based on past sensory experiences. Senses trigger one another. Just read the word “rose” and you can smell it. See a lemon and pucker up.

Smell is the sense most linked to memory. A whiff of Grandma’s perfume, the first Spring lilacs, or the charred scent of a campfire will snap you back in history faster than any photograph or story.

Beautiful, delicious, fragrant plants engage our senses, but it is not their job. It is coincidence that the sensory input of plants affects us at all. Their scents and colors and tastes are all geared toward one thing: species survival – theirs, not ours.

Textures and colors calibrate absorption of light and moisture; scent and markings attract pollinators; flavor and sound are related to ripening, decay and dehydration, which lead to dispersal of seeds and start the whole cycle again.

We are happy bystanders to botany, connected by our five senses.
