A new class about tree identification and care will begin at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden this Saturday.

What Tree Is That?

Dr. Jerrold Turney, Instructor
Bamboo Room: 10am – 12noon

Learn the trees of southern California in this four-session class with plant pathologist and arborist, Dr. Jerrold Turney. Participants will learn about 60 trees, 21 of them this Saturday! A one-hour lecture will be followed by a walk in the Arboretum during which participants will learn how to identify the trees they just learned about in lecture.

Pre-registration preferred, but you may register at the door. Please call the Class Registration line at 626.821.4623.

Colored Pencil in Botanical Art with Cristina Baltayian

Learn the colored pencil techniques used by botanical artists. Special topics to be explored in 2013 include: water-soluble pencil techniques, solvents, colored pencil sticks, pen & ink with colored pencil, composition. All levels of experience are welcome. Students will receive a supply list. Registrants may bring a lunch or buy lunch at the Peacock Cafe.

She is a member of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California and the American Society of Botanical Artists.

Visit the Dutch Society of Botanical Artists Published in conjunction with the 5th anniversary of the Dutch Society of Botanical Artists. This collectors edition brings into focus bulb and tuber crops available in the Netherlands. Drawing and painting the bulbs required studious and patient documentation over several growing seasons. This book contains a selection of the collection created by the Dutch Society of Botanical Artists. Twenty-seven species of bulb and tuber crops are presented in twenty-five watercolor paintings and two graphite drawings.

I became aware of the societies in England and America and was really shocked that in a country like mine, the Netherlands with its long history of flower painting and where there are so many breeders and flowers and where plants cost almost nothing, there was not such a society…

See what’s new!

This weekend ArtPlantae will take part in the First Annual Holiday Party at Aurea Vista, Riverside’s newest shopping destination. The holidays aren’t the only thing to celebrate this weekend, however.

ArtPlantae is celebrating the launch of a new plant-based education section featuring resources for children, parents, and teachers. Dedicated specifically to botany and botanical art education, this section features curriculum by the National Gardening Association, children’s books about plants (in English, Spanish and many under $10!), instructional books about drawing and botanical art, plant identification guides, and the Colorful Edibles coloring book published by the American Society of Botanical Artists.

Discover more this Saturday during the holiday party. The festivities begin at
4:00 PM and continue until 9:00 PM. Meet local artists and designers and finish your holiday shopping too. Visit ArtPlantae’s new area about plant-based education and receive a free gift. It is located downstairs across from the children’s boutique.

    Botanical Illustration/Gardening
    This new program is taught in conjunction with time spent gardening with well-known local gardeners at the Lyceum. Instructor Jane Flury will provide beginning to advanced drawing instruction. Students may take gardening, botanical illustration or both. This is an ongoing class taught on Fridays from 3:30-5:00 PM. Cost: $85 for 6 classes, includes materials.
