Urban Sanctuary Hosts Botanical Art Exhibition and Classes

The Quinta Mazatlan Nature Center in McAllen, Texas is a historic adobe mansion featuring birding trails, an art gallery, a nature store and educational programs. The nature center has been added to Classes Near You > Texas. Take a look!

Built in 1935 as a private residence, Quinta Mazatlan is now an urban sanctuary dedicated to “sharing knowledge about birds, plants, and environmental stewardship in South Texas.” The nature center has partnered with the World Birding Center, Inc. and recently opened their first LEED-certified building, a Discovery Center for children. Quinta Mazatlan offers classes for adults and children and hosts art exhibitions too. The botanical art of Sue Sill is currently on view in the Art in Nature Gallery.

Botanical Illustration – Saturday, May 26, 2012; 10 AM – 4 PM. New students are welcome to attend the third installment of a workshop series about botanical illustration taught by Sue Sill. In this class, students will learn how to add watercolor to a drawing or sketch. Cost: $55 per person. Materials included. Bring lunch. View Details/Register.

Botanical Art Exhibition in New York’s Hudson Valley

Artist and teacher, Wendy Hollender, will host a exhibition of botanical art on May 19 at Hollengold Farm, her organic farm located in the Hudson Valley in New York. This exhibition will feature the artwork of Carol Woodin, Paul Harwood and Wendy Hollender. Meet the artists and learn about the summer workshops each will teach at the farm.

Carol Woodin and Wendy Hollender will teach Botanical Art Basics twice per month on Friday afternoons beginning June 1, 2012.

Paul Harwood, Carol Woodin and Wendy Hollender will each teach Saturday workshops at the farm. These all-day workshops include a farm-fresh lunch! Choose from these summer workshops at Hollengold Farm:

Denver Botanic Gardens Announces Classes, Special Workshops in Botanical Art

This program works collaboratively with El Charco del Ingenio, a nature reserve and botanical garden in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. Amelia is the Director of Cylburn Nature Science Camp in Baltimore and teaches botanical art at Cylburn Arboretum. Learn more about Amelia and view examples of her work in the ASBA Member Gallery.

Botanical Art in Zirahuen

Come to the shore of one of the cleanest lakes in Mexico to learn how to paint realistic watercolor illustrations of native wildflowers. Brush up on drawing skills and practice traditional watercolor techniques of graded wash, wet-in-wet and drybrush as you enjoy beautiful weather and the unique flora of Mexico’s central highlands. Swim in Lake Zirahuen, go zip-lining far above the lake, hike in the pine forests, bird-watch, sing around the campfire and partake in wholesome meals created from the organic produce of Michoacan, the “breadbasket of Mexico.” This one-of-a-kind adventure will be led by experienced botanical art instructor, master naturalist and science teacher Amalia Hoopes.

Cost: $546, includes 2 meals/day; does not include lodging or transportation. For an additional fee, transportation can be arranged to and from the Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo airport on Tuesday or Wednesday, June 19th or 20th and on Wednesday or Thursday, July 4th or 5th. Transportation can also be arranged to and from the Morelia airport. Please contact Amalia Hoopes for lodging information. Options range from free camping to a resort hotel.
