Helen Byers has announced a new botanical painting class for Spring. You have been introduced to Helen’s classes before. Helen is one of the instructors teaching the field sketching class at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.

An artist and arts journalist with a background in literary and educational publishing, Helen has illustrated six children’s books and six literary book covers. She offers classes in field sketching, botanical painting, portraiture and classes following Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.

    Introduction to Botanical Painting in Watercolor – Wednesdays, May 2-23, 2012; 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Students will learn botanical drawing and painting techniques emphasizing technical control and attention to detail. Working both indoors with live specimens and outdoors in the field, students will benefit from daily instructor demonstrations and individual attention. Take a class with artist Valerie Littlewood and you will learn more than how to draw and paint from the natural world. You will learn about botany, bees, butterflies, ecology and even bits about small beasts along the way. In her classes, Valerie works with students whose interests range from making nature journals, to keeping garden notebooks, to creating paintings of flowers, plants and insects.

Valerie Littlewood has been a commercial illustrator, designer for industry, artist and art lecturer for many years. Most recently she has been drawing plants and insects, becoming more and more interested in their relationships and their conservation. Currently she is drawing bees and other pollinators and has a traveling show “BUZZ” A Celebration of British Bees and their Flowers that showcases 24 of Britain’s bees. Valerie was awarded a bursary from The Society for All Artists in 2012 to help encourage creative people of all abilities to take inspiration from the natural world, from insects, bees and flowers and to understand more about their important relationship to us. When not painting drawing or designing, reading or writing, she is battling with a new muddy patch of garden in Grafham, Cambs UK. The Natural History Artist Residency at the Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville, NY is accepting applications for 2012.

The residency program provides professional and aspiring natural history artists with an opportunity to work in the field. Artists can produce work in the medium of their choice. In exchange for housing and studio space, artists are asked to contribute an original work for exhibition and publication. Selected artists will work at the remote biological field station for one to two weeks.

Interested artists must submit an artists’ statement, an application, support material, and electronic images on CD. Residency dates at the 2,000 acre Huyck Preserve are June 4-24, 2012 and August 17-31, 2010. Application deadline is March 15, 2012.

  • National Public Gardens Day – Friday, May 11, 2012; 9 AM – 5 PM. National Public Gardens Day is a celebration of America’s public gardens and their important role in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation and education.
