SAVE THE DATE: Botanical Art to Tour New England

Open up that brand new 18-month calendar!

The New England Society of Botanical Artists will launch a traveling exhibition about native New England plants in May 2013. The exhibition, entitled
From the Mountains to the Sea: Plants, Trees and Shrubs of New England, will travel to Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Maine through 2014. This exhibition will travel to the following venues:

Traveling Exhibition About John & William Bartram

The American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), in collaboration with
Bartram’s Garden in Philadelphia, is curating an exhibition of original contemporary botanical artworks depicting plants discovered and introduced by John and William Bartram, American pioneers in botany and horticulture.

Very soon ASBA members will submit artworks for consideration and a team of four jurors will select about 40 works to be included in this traveling exhibition. This exhibition will focus on the native plant discoveries made by John and William in their travels throughout the eastern wilderness between the 1730’s and 1790’s. An illustrated, full-color booklet will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.

This traveling exhibition will be on view at the following venues:

South Florida Museum

Cherokee Garden Library

In 1884, Lewis Ginter purchased some property and built a gathering place for Richmond bicyclists. One hundred years later, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden was established on this same piece of property and soon became one of the top five destinations in Virginia. The Garden is home to Artbase a searchable database containing 2,500 botanical watercolor paintings by Alexandre Descubes. The Adult Education program at the garden includes workshops in botanical drawing and painting.

Needle-Felting with Botanical Subjects

Artist Judy Thomas leads this new, exploratory media for botanical art, a hybrid of illustration and fiber art. Create three-dimensional botanical images felted to a fabric base. Needle-felting involves the use of a barbed needle to use wool’s natural ability to ‘lock’ together. Learn the tools and techniques of needle felting and create a small image and a larger composition using beautiful colored wools. No prior experience needed. Registrants will receive a supply list. Backing pieces and wool are provided.

Cost: $102 nonmembers, $80 members.

Draw & Paint Plants at Lewisham Arthouse in UK

The Lewisham Arthouse once served as the central library of Deptford. Designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas (1868-1948) and funded by Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), this former library is now features a public gallery and studio space for professional artists. Artist studios are open to the public once per year. Exhibitions in the gallery are open to the public year-round, free of charge. Ten-week botanical illustration classes are taught by Alison Day. Watch for information about her next class.

Drawing from Plant Life

This introductory course aims to provide an opportunity to explore the art and science of botanical Illustration. Students will have the opportunity to explore both drawing and painting plants whilst learning a range of graphic techniques used to represent plant material. Some basic theory is taught and where relevant historical and contemporary practice is referenced.

The course is taught by a practicing artist who has a background in the science of botany and the practice of fine art.

Students are asked to bring their own ideas and specimens to the course. Basic materials and reference literature are provided, students must provide their own sketchbook pencils and colours. All are welcome, no experience needed.

This is a small class and provides and supportive and relaxed environment in which to draw. Places are limited so booking is required. Please contact Alison Day.

Heeyoung Kim is a botanical artist whose illustrations and paintings of American prairie plants have graced posters, postcards and exhibition catalogs. Heeyoung is passionate about documenting prairie plants and brings attention to the fragile state of America’s prairies by exhibiting her work in national and international exhibitions.

Painting Stems and Leaves in Watercolor

Stems are not boring. Stems are not just something that connects flowers and leaves. Stems can become the compelling focal point of a composition when they are arranged effectively and deliberately.

During this two-day workshop, Heeyoung will assist students with the coloring process step-by-step through demonstrations and individualized instruction. Students are expected to select their own specimens (Heeyoung will use an oak branch with some leaves), and prepare a drawing before the watercolor workshop begins so they can focus on watercolor techniques during the two-day workshop. This class will be held at Brushwood Gallery, Ryerson Wood, 21850 N Riverwoods Road, Deerfield, IL 60015.

Registrants who want to spend some extra time to ensure their drawings will be suitable for the watercolor workshop can take this optional drawing class with Heeyoung. Karen is an award-winning botanical artist whose illustrations of fruit, vegetables, herbs and other food items have been used on the packaging of many familiar products. Botanical Painting Workshop 2013

Learn how to use light, shadow and detail to make your botanical subject come alive! Students have the option of working on paper or vellum. Class time will include many demonstrations about drawing, choosing color, and botanical art techniques, as well as time for individual instruction. Students will paint spring flowers. This class is open to all levels of experience. This is the only class that will be offered in the beautiful seaside whaling village of Sag Harbor in the Hamptons, New York during 2013, so register early.

Cost: $225 (plus $25 for 8″ x 10″ piece of vellum should you choose to work on vellum)

Suggested Accommodations:
Sag Harbor is a beautiful old whaling village with Victorian houses, nice shops and restaurants, and is located right on the water with a Long Wharf, windmill and docks. The Sag Harbor Inn has rooms available that overlook the bay. The Inn is within walking distance to the village shops and the wharf. There is bus service (the Hampton Jitney), whose bus service runs every hour from Manhattan and airport connections and stops in Sag Harbor. There will be a special rate at the Inn for students of this class. Mention “Botanical Painting Class” when making your reservation for the discounted rate.
