Botanical Art Workshop Holiday in Norway 2015
June 28 – July 5, 2015

Award-winning botanical artist Gaynor Dickeson will lead a botanical art workshop in Norway in 2015. Travel to the banks of the Oslo Fjord and spend your mornings immersed in botanical art.

Demonstrations and one-on-one instruction will occur after breakfast between Monday June 29 – Saturday July 4. Afternoons are free to explore. Gaynor will be available in the studio for advice on most afternoons. This workshop is suitable for new beginners and highly experienced botanical artists. Class limit is 12 students. Students will work in graphite, colored pencil and watercolor.

Anne-Marie Evans is coming to Southern California!

Known throughout the world as a master teacher of botanical art, Anne-Marie will teach three classes at Virginia Robinson Gardens in March. Anne-Marie’s classes are filled with the most thoroughly researched methods of giving information so that students can benefit to the fullest from their attendance. Drawing, aerial perspective and composition will be covered in-depth and every student of botanical art will benefit from Anne-Marieʼs expertise. Students will be given the knowledge to advance their future botanical works.

    Chinese Brush Painting Workshop with Internationally Renowned Artist Nan Rae

    Thursday, March 5, 2015
    10:00 am – 3:30 pm

    Beginners and experienced artists are invited to join the first Chinese Brush painting workshop at Virginia Robinson Gardens. NanRae is internationally known for her superb craftmanship of this ancient art form. She has paintings in museums and many prominent private collections. Nan Rae has been featured in television documentaries, has written a well received book, lectures and has monthly art classes at the Huntington Botanical Center in San Marino.     Make a personal herbarium. Historically, herbariums have been used by botanists and gardeners to preserve and catalog their plant collections. The Upward Bound Math & Science program and STEM Student Success Center at Moreno Valley College invite you to celebrate Pi Day on March 14, 2015.

The STEM -“U”- LATE Your Mind event will feature STEM-related demonstrations and interactive activities for families and students. In 2012 artist and educator Estelle DeRidder was awarded an education grant to create identification cards about the flora of the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance, CA. Her project is now complete and the exhibition featuring Estelle’s original paintings has traveled from the marsh to inland California.

The Flora of the Madrona Marsh will feature the original paintings created for the project. The exhibition will be on view at the La Crescenta Public Library January 24 – February 28, 2015.

When the exhibition opens tomorrow, Estelle will present a PowerPoint presentation about the botanical illustration process. You are invited to learn about botanical illustration and how Estelle completed her botanical study at Madrona Marsh.

The opening of The Flora of the Madrona Marsh will be held Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 2-4 PM. The La Crescenta Public Library is located at 2809 Foothill Blvd, La Crescenta, CA 91214 (map).

The United State Botanic Gardens will host a special lecture series about botanic gardens and how they have contributed to our knowledge of plants.

Alain Touwaide, Scientific Director of the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions, and Research Associate at the Smithsonian Institute, will explore four gardens and discuss their contributions to botanical history. Drawing with Alison Day The Lewisham Arthouse in London will offer another ten-week workshop with Alison Day. This workshop begins in early February.

The Lewisham Arthouse once served as the central library of Deptford. Designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas (1868-1948) and funded by Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), this former library is now a public gallery and studio space for professional artists. Artist studios are open to the public once per year. Exhibitions in the gallery are open to the public year-round, free of charge. Botanical illustration classes are taught by Alison Day.

    Begins February 9, 2015 (ten weeks)
    1:00 – 2:30 PM

    This introductory course aims to provide an opportunity to explore the art and science of botanical illustration. Students will have the opportunity to explore both drawing and painting plants while learning a range of graphic techniques used to represent plant material. Some basic theory is taught and, where relevant, historical and contemporary practice is referenced.

    This course is taught by a practicing artist who has a background in the science of botany and the practice of fine art.

    Students are asked to bring their own ideas and specimens to the course as well as drawing plants. Basic materials are provided, together with reference literature, students must provide their own sketch book pencils and colours.

    All are welcome, no experience needed. This is a small class and provides and supportive and relaxed environment in which to draw.

    Places are limited so booking is required. Cost: £95/90 concessions
