International Workshops Now Easier to Find

The page for Classes Near You > International has been reorganized. It is now easier to find and easier to navigate. Also, a page for South Africa has been added. Earlier this week, the Botanical Artists Association of Southern Africa (Gauteng Branch) announced one of their founding members will teach drawing workshops at the South African National Biodiversity Institute. Botanical Drawing – National Herbarium Lecture Hall, Pretoria National Botanical Garden. Instructor Gillian Condy will teach this class three times in 2010. Classes are scheduled for: March 8-10, 2010; August 10-12, 2010; and November 25-27, 2010 (9:00 AM – 4:30 PM). Cost: R650.00. A materials list will be provided to registered participants.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden Offers Evening Drawing Class

In 1884, Lewis Ginter purchased some property and built a gathering place for Richmond bicyclists. One hundred years later, the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is established on this same piece of property and soon became one of the top five destinations in Virginia. It is also home to Artbase a searchable database containing 2,500 botanical watercolor paintings by Alexandre Descubes. The Adult Education program at the garden includes workshops in botanical drawing and painting. Complete course descriptions and registration information are available here. Courses include:

Color Theory for Botanical Artists – Wednesdays, March 3, 10, 17, 24; 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Color harmony, watercolor techniques, and special effects will be discussed. $215 non-members / $175 members
Basic Botanical Illustration with Cindle Kollman – March 8-12, 2010; 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM. Beginning illustration class includes a historical look at botanical art and the use of techniques required to draw nature accurately. Most materials are provided. $220 non-members / $175 members
How to Draw (More) Stuff in the Garden – Thursday evenings April 8, 15, 22 (6 – 8 PM) and Saturday mornings April 10, 17, 24 (9:30 AM – 12:30 PM). A continuation of “How to Draw Stuff”. Also for artists with previous drawing experience. Saturday classes will be held in the garden. $165 non-members / $135 members
Botanical Illustration Workshop with Juliet Kirby: Spring Blooming Bulbs – Tuesdays & Thursdays, April 20, 22, 27, 29; 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM. Prerequisite: Completion of one botanical illustration course. Participants will draw and paint bulbs from the garden. $210 non-members / $170 members
Anatomy of Flowers for Botanical Artists – Wednesdays, April 21, 28; 10:00 – 2:30 PM. Disect and draw flowers to understand their structure. $115 non-members / $96 members.

Certificate Program in Botanical Art at the United States Botanic Garden

The U.S. Botanic Garden was established in 1820 and is managed by the U.S. Congress. The garden serves as a living plant museum. The Corcoran College of Art & Design has partnered with the USBG and offers a certificate in botanical art and illustration through the garden. Celebrating the Artist as Explorer at the Philadelphia Flower Show

In keeping with the theme of the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, Passport To The World, the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators (PSBI) has chosen to showcase paintings of plants introduced to the U.S from the far corners of the world by plant hunting expeditions throughout history. This exhibition will be on view February 28 – March 7, 2010.

A little known fact is that illustrators have always been important members of plant expeditions. What surprises many is the fact that many of these early botanical artists, who traveled to some of the most remote and uncivilized places on earth were women! While botanical illustration is by no means an exclusively female occupation, the PSBI would like to dispel the myth that it is a mere “hobby” for the pampered housewife. Botanical artists are still valued today on plant hunting expeditions to illustrate specimens in an accurate and detailed manner that even the most sophisticated camera cannot capture. Our members will educate the public to both the history and techniques of botanical illustration both through continuing demonstrations at our exhibit and an informative brochure describing the role of the botanical artist through history. This year the society will donate a portion of sales of paintings to the Philadelphia-area Living Beyond Breast Cancer organization. This is a cause that is dear to the hearts of many of our members and their families. It’s almost impossible to find someone who hasn’t be touched by this horrific disease on some way.
