About ArtPlantae

ArtPlantae was founded by Tania Marien in 2002 and began as an Artists’ Herbarium and newsletter. Today this resource serves artists, naturalists, and educators pursuing interests in botany, botanical art and environmental education in formal and informal learning environments. Its principal goal is to encourage an interest in plants through art, science, and interpretation.

Topics related to plant-based education, botanical art and the links between drawing and knowing (knowing plants, specifically) are explored through the teaching and learning column. The purpose of this column is to connect artists, naturalists, and educators so they can learn from each other and apply what they learn in their own classrooms and programs.

You may remember that a bookstore used to be a part of this site. ArtPlantae LLC managed ArtPlantae Books from 2006-2013. The bookstore was a curated collection of resources related to plant-based education and art supporting ArtPlantae’s primary mission of using drawing as a learning tool to encourage an interest in plants. The books and supplies offered through the store complemented the content of this blog. ArtPlantae LLC also managed a smaller specialty shop selling independent titles such as exhibition catalogs of contemporary botanical art by the American Society of Botanical Artists. The retail component of ArtPlantae closed in 2016.

About Tania Marien

Tania served as full-time editor, educator, and bookseller at ArtPlantae for 16 years. She led programs and introduced audiences to plants and botanical illustration at environmental education events, botanical gardens, museums, and private gardens. She is currently investigating the contributions that freelance informal educators, like many of the educators featured here, make to lifelong learning in communities.
