Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, Arcadia

Courses in introductory botanical drawing, beginning and intermediate watercolor, colored pencil, sketching and Chinese brush painting are taught throughout the year.     Drawing with Colored Pencil for Children
    Children ages 9-13 will use pencils to develop observation and fine motor skills, focusing on color mixing and drawing techniques while using  objects  from  nature  and everyday life. This class will be held on Thursday afternoons (3:30 – 5:30 PM). Two sections of this class are available for Fall 2012. Cost: $145 Arboretum members, $160 non-members; 10% discount for siblings. Minimum enrollment: 5 children, Maximum enrollment: 10 children.

    Using Colored Pencil in Botanical Art
    Learn the colored pencil techniques used by botanical artists! All levels of experience are welcome. Students will receive a supply list. Pre-registration required. Registrants may bring a lunch or buy lunch at the Peacock Cafe. Both Tuesday and Saturday classes will be offered beginning in May. The Summer/Fall 2012 schedule is as follows:

    Each individual class will explore flowers, fruits, vegetables and related subjects. Participants will learn how to use colored pencils techniques to achieve beautiful, painterly results. Cristina Baltayian is a botanical artist with a background in drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen & ink), two-dimensional design, watercolor and colored pencil. Her work has been shown at Filoli, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Chapman University. She is a member of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California and the American Society of Botanical Artists.

Lala Ragimov

A Southern California artist who studies the techniques of Renaissance painters and uses these techniques in her work. Her work is currently on view in the solo exhibition, Envisioning the Natural World, at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center. Lala’s classes appeal to a general audience and can accommodate participants working on independent projects. Botanical artists are welcome! The classes below are taught at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center in Torrance, CA.

Envisioning the Natural World
Paintings and Drawings by Lala Ragimov
Madrona Marsh Nature Center
Torrance, CA
August 28 – October 5, 2012

Southern California artist, Lala Ragimov, studies the techniques of Renaissance painters and uses these techniques in her work. Beginning tomorrow, Lala’s paintings and drawings of nature will be on view at the Madrona Marsh Nature Center in Torrance, CA. Her watercolor and gouache paintings of plants, birds and landscapes will be on exhibit through October 5, 2012.

An artist’s reception will be held on August 31 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. All are invited!

The Lewisham Arthouse once served as the central library of Deptford. Designed by architect Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas (1868-1948) and funded by Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919), this former library is now features a public gallery and studio space for professional artists. Artist studios are open to the public once per year. Exhibitions in the gallery are open to the public year-round, free of charge. Ten-week botanical illustration classes are taught by Alison Day. Watch for information about her next class.

    Botanical Illustration
    Mondays, September 10 – November 12, 2012
    1:30 – 3:30 PM

    This is an introductory course for all, no experience needed. Students will have the opportunity to explore drawing plants and become aware of the range of techniques for representation together with some tuition in basic scientific structure of the plant. The latter not only increases the students’ appreciation of the plant, but assists in the rendering of the plant in graphic form.

    Students will need to bring their own materials for drawing; all other equipment and materials are provided. The course is taught within an artist’s studio complex and is led by Alison Day, who is both artist/photographer and qualified botanist/environmentalist.

The Eden Project

Located in Cornwall, England, the Eden Project is a non-profit whose focus is connecting people to the natural world through educational programs, social programs, music and art. See how the Eden Project was transformed from a clay pit to an international institute for learning.

    Botanical Illustration – October 5-7, 2012; 10 AM – 4 PM. A three-day class about botany and botanical illustration. On Day One, participants will learn about plants, their structures and their functions. On Day Two and Day Three, botanical artists Mally Francis and Ros Franklin will teach botanical drawing using fruit and the autumn harvest as their themes. Elaine Searle is a botanical artist and experienced instructor who has taught extensively in the UK and USA. By popular demand she has extended her 2013 Umbrian painting holiday to 10 days. A one-day excursion to medieval Fabriano to learn how to make paper is included. Previous visits have attracted students of all levels from the UK, USA, Europe, the Caribbean and Japan.

Non-painters are also welcome as the national park setting is perfect for nature walks, independent sightseeing with a rental car or simply lazing by the pool with a good book.
