Courses in introductory botanical drawing, beginning and intermediate watercolor, colored pencil, sketching and Chinese brush painting are taught throughout the year. Colored Pencil in Botanical Art with Cristina Baltayian
Learn the colored pencil techniques used by botanical artists. Special topics to be explored in 2013 include: water-soluble pencil techniques, solvents, colored pencil sticks, pen & ink with colored pencil, composition. All levels of experience are welcome. Students will receive a supply list. Registrants may bring a lunch or buy lunch at the Peacock Cafe.

Cristina Baltayian is a botanical artist with a background in drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen & ink), two-dimensional design, watercolor and colored pencil. Her work has been shown at Filoli, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Chapman University. She is a member of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California and the American Society of Botanical Artists.

What Tree Is That?
Dr. Jerrold Turney, Instructor
Bamboo Room: 10am – noon
Learn the trees of southern California in this four-session class with plant pathologist and arborist, Dr. Jerrold Turney. Participants will learn about 60 trees, 21 of them this Saturday! A one-hour lecture will be followed by a walk in the Arboretum during which participants will learn how to identify the trees they just learned about in lecture.

ArtPlantae is proud to again participate as a partner of National Environmental Education Week (EE Week). Hosted by the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), EE Week is the nation’s largest celebration of environmental education. Held each year the week before Earth Day, this annual event inspires environmental learning and stewardship among K-12 students.
This year educators will explore how technology can be used to enhance environmental learning both inside and outside the classroom. The theme for EE Week 2013 is Greening STEM: Taking Technology Outdoors. The acronym “STEM” stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.
As part of Taking Technology Outdoors, EE Week will highlight how to connect kids with nature through new technologies that enable scientific research and 21st century skills including creativity, innovation, communication and collaboration.
During the month of April, we’ll explore how technology can be used to encourage an interest in plants and botanical art. Using the new “Tips & Tools” feature, we’ll find out how artists, naturalists and teachers use technology (get ready to share!). We’ll also take a traditional look at botanical art. We won’t step too far away from technology when we do this, however, because it’s technology that makes enlightenment possible.
All of this, plus outreach events too. Hope you’ll join us!

In the January reader survey, a respondent mentioned he/she wanted to know what kind of paper other artists were using. This person didn’t include any specifics, so I am pulling this out of the request pile and posing these questions to you this week:
What kind of paper do you use for drawing, painting or sketching? Why do you use them? Is it paper quality or simply because these kinds of paper (or brands) are readily available and usually on sale?
