The Art of the Creepy Crawlies Science and Art Drawing Class
Saturday, October 27, 2012
9 AM – Noon

In this unique art and science class, students in grades 5-8 will learn about illustrations created by 18th century explorers, examine “creepy crawlies,” and create their own scientific illustration. Students will practice basic observational drawing techniques and will apply their observation and drawing skills using the resources of the Lloyd Library. This class will be taught by medical illustrator, Marcia Hartsock. Cost: $25

Artist’s Book Workshop with Laura Stickney

Make your own accordion-folded book with decorative covers and create carved stamps in this book arts class for adults. This is an easy and fun project — no art experience necessary. Laura is a visual artist, poet and the Theodore Payne Foundation’s 2012 Artist in Residence. For 25 years, she taught and coordinated art classes at the Junior Arts Center in Barnsdall Art Park and continues to teach etching and parent/child art workshops in her community. Limit: 12 participants. Cost: $20 members, $25 nonmembers.

Looking for Natural History Illustrations?

The Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) has millions of them and they want your help sorting them out. Earlier this year, the Missouri Botanical Garden received funding to identify and describe the natural history illustrations that can be found in the digitized books and journals in the library’s collection.

A system of cataloging and describing the images has been devised. Now the new system (i.e., schema) needs to be reviewed. The Art of Life project team who is sorting through BHLs images is seeking feedback from artists, biologists, humanities scholars, librarians and educators to help them determine if their cataloging system will satisfy the research needs of these groups.

Folded Books at the Rowboat Gallery

Folded books by artist Andie Thrams are on view at the Rowboat Gallery in Oregon. The collection on view was inspired by Andie’s field studies and creative projects.

Also on view are the rattan forms of basket maker and mixed media artist, Shannon Weber.

Both exhibitions can be enjoyed through September 3, 2012.

The Frye Art Museum was established in 1952 and contains the collection of Seattle collectors and philanthropists, Charles Frye (1858-1940) and Emma Frye (1860-1934).

    Urban Foraging and Botanical Illustration – October 6, 13, and 20; 9 AM – 4 PM. Learn to identify edible and medicinal plants growing in Seattle’s urban landscape. Each field excursion is followed by a studio session in which participants will learn how to draw and paint the plants they collected. Field excursions are three hours in length. Sketchbook Challenge Blog Hop

Yesterday an exciting thing happened for the team at The Sketchbook Challenge. A book based on their wildly popular website was published by Potter Craft.

Written by Sketchbook Challenge founder, Sue Bleiweiss, the book The Sketchbook Challenge: Techniques, Prompts, and Inspiration for Achieving Your Creative Goals is a collection of themes, techniques, and art that will inspire first-time artists and experienced artists alike.

Bleiweiss’ introduction to paper, sketchbook formats, mark-making tools, paints, adhesives, and loosening-up exercises is followed by twelve chapters of themes and specific instruction about thirteen techniques. The techniques receiving special attention by Bleiweiss are: screen printing, stenciling, digital printing, thread sketching, painted papers for collage, hand-carved stamps, hand-dyed fabric, soy wax resist, image transfers, foiling, silk fusion, moldable foam stamps, and a 4-step drawing technique.

While these techniques are presented in a special “spotlight” feature, this book is really about several techniques and features a rich selection of examples of how these techniques are used by the 21 artists who have contributed their knowledge and artwork to this mixed media guide for sketchbooks.

The Sketchbook Challenge is a wonderful resource for anyone who lets a blank sketchbook, with its white pages, suppress their creative urges. If this is you, then I encourage you to browse through several pages of this book online.
