Now there are even more opportunities to learn how to use colored pencils in botanical art. The new schedule at the L.A. County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens includes both weekday and weekend classes. Here is what’s new in Southern California:


Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, Arcadia

Courses in introductory botanical drawing, beginning and intermediate watercolor, colored pencil, sketching and Chinese brush painting are taught throughout the year.     Using Colored Pencil in Botanical Art
    Learn the colored pencil techniques used by botanical artists! All levels of experience are welcome. Students will receive a supply list. Pre-registration required. Registrants may bring a lunch or buy lunch at the Peacock Cafe. Both Tuesday and Saturday classes will be offered beginning in May. The Summer/Fall 2012 schedule is as follows:

    These classes will focus on techniques, composition and color mixing. All levels of experience are welcome.

    Each individual class will explore flowers, fruits, vegetables and related subjects. Participants will learn how to use colored pencils techniques to achieve beautiful, painterly results. You may register for one class at a time. A supply list will be provided upon registration; you can also bring your lunch or buy it at the Peacock Café.

    10 AM – 4 PM, includes a one-hour lunch break (5 hours of class)
    $95 Arboretum members per Saturday
    $115 Non-members per Saturday

Cristina Baltayian is a botanical artist with a background in drawing (graphite, charcoal, pen & ink), two-dimensional design, watercolor and colored pencil. Her work has been shown at Filoli, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Chapman University. She is a member of the Botanical Artists Guild of Southern California and the American Society of Botanical Artists.

    Art Workshop – Mondays. This self-directed workshop (no instructor) provides a supportive, encouraging environment for those who wish to pursue their artistic endeavors in watercolor, graphite, pastels, etc. Both beginning and experienced artists are welcome. It is a wonderful opportunity to develop at your own speed in your own media while being in the company of those with like interests. Each session of eight meetings costs $35 for Arboretum members ($42 non-members). Upcoming sessions: December 5, 2011 – February 6, 2012; February 13—April 2, 2012; April 9—May 28, 2012; June 4—July 23, 2012. Artists meet in the Oak Room from 9:30 – 11:30 AM. A few weeks ago, Carol Gracie wrote about how she has introduced people to the wonderful world of plants through her work at the New York Botanical Garden, as a guide of ecological tours and through her books.

Today Carol has a new way to teach people about plants! Together with her publisher, Princeton University Press, Carol has launched Wildflower Wednesdays. In this series, Carol brings attention to wildflowers growing in the northeastern United States. Carol will write about a different plant every Wednesday and share images from her wonderful collection of field photographs.

Spring Show for The Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators
The Station Gallery

The Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators (PSBI) invite you to their annual juried exhibition!

Beginning today, thirty-six paintings by twenty artists will be on view at The Station Gallery in Greenville, Delaware.

An opening reception will be held this Friday, April 13, 2012 from 5-8 PM. Meet the artists, ask questions about their process and learn more about the PSBI, their outreach projects and the classes taught by members.

The Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators was founded in 1997 to celebrate the achievements of its members, to provide exhibition opportunities for members and to introduce new audiences to botanical illustration.

Last month, the PSBI received an award at the Philadelphia International Flower Show for Best Achievement, Horticultural Art and Illustration for their exhibition featuring the plants of Hawaii. Learn more about The Flora of Hawaii: Indigenous, Endemic or Invasive on the PSBI blog.

Wendy Hollender at Hollengold Farm

Wendy Hollender is an illustrator, author, and teacher. She teaches at the New York Botanical Garden and at Hollengold Farm, her organic vegetable farm. Wendy is the author of Botanical Drawing in Color. A new exciting schedule of classes for 2012 has been announced, as well as two new instructors:

    Botanical Drawing Basics – Fridays, twice per month (8 sessions); 2-5 PM. Could there be a nicer way to spend a summer afternoon? Botanical artists Wendy Hollender and Carol Woodin will teach this introductory course to botanical illustration throughout the summer at Hollengold Farm. Cost: $440. The dates for this class are as follows:

    Saturday Workshops at Hollengold Farm
    – Saturdays. Workshops are held 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Six one-day workshops are planned through October 2012. Workshops will be taught by Paul Harwood, Carol Woodin and Wendy Hollender. Each workshop will focus on a specific topic. Topics include botanical field sketching, drawing trees in charcoal and chalk, drawing fresh produce, drawing still lifes, heirloom fruits in watercolor, and drawing dahlias.
    Cost per workshop: $105, includes a farm-fresh lunch.
