    Introduction to Botanical Art & Illustration I
    Mondays, September 19 – November 15, 2011; 10 AM – 1 PM. This class is designed for beginners/advanced beginners. Observation and research skills, basic drawing skills with black & white medium (graphite pencil and pen-and-ink) will be introduced along with brief botanical art history. In this ten-week class, students will also learn basic botany, which is essential for botanical artists to make their work botanically accurate. Precise reviews and critiques will follow every class and two independent projects will be completed by each student. Colored medium, watercolor and colored pencil will be introduced in Introduction to Botanical Art and Illustration II.

Learn to Draw Nature & How to Use Natural Dyes

This 49-acre site is home to programs educating the public about the southern Llano Estacado and surrounding area. Museum specialist and scientific illustrator, Michael M. Nickell, teaches the Center’s courses about nature drawing and journaling. He has been a professional practicing scientific illustrator and nature artists for over 30 years. He clients include National Geographic, Texas Parks and Wildlife, The Museum of Texas Tech University, Lubbock Lake Landmark, The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Oklahoma, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, The Square House Museum, Encyclopedia Britannica, and others.

  • Introduction to Nature Drawing – September 12 & 26,
    October 10 & 24 and November 7, 2011; 6:30 – 8:30 PM.
    Cost $50 members, $80 nonmembers.
  • How to Use Your Digital Camera – September 12 & 14, 2011; 6-8 PM. Cost: $25 members, $35 nonmembers. Instructor: Richard Galle

The ArtWorks Gallery is a learning space for artists and students located in the heart of the restoration area in downtown Scranton.

    Botanical Illustration Made Easy – November 15, 2011; 6-8 PM. Learn how to draw easily and quickly to bring botanical illustrations to life. Create hand-colored ink drawings and take home a matted image. Instructor Aleta Yarrow is the Director of Interpretive Programs at the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science and Art. She had taught botanical illustration at the Arnot Art Museum, Tanglewood Nature Center and Cornell University. Cost: $35, including materials. The Brenton Arboretum is a 140-acre arboretum established in 1997 featuring 2,600 trees and shrubs. Most of the more than 175 species of trees and shrubs are organized by species to ease learning and to emphasize the importance of trees in our world. The event schedule for 2011 includes:

  • Founder’s Tour of Trees – Saturday, September 10, 2011; 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Discover the beauty of trees and shrubs with founder, Buz Brenton. This walking tour is free for children and members.   • Drawing Small Mammals – Saturday, September 24, 2011;
    10 AM – 4 PM. Create the texture of fur and the expressive eyes of animals living in coastal Alabama using graphite and colored pencils. No experience necessary! All art supplies provided. Location: 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center (on the Causeway). Cost: $50. Registration deadline is Wednesday, September 21, 2011.
  • Mini-Workshop: Drawing Birds – Saturday, October 15, 2011; 2-5 PM. This workshop will be taught in conjunction with a Bird Day scheduled at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Mobile, AL. Details to be announced.
  • Draw and Paint Holiday Botanicals – Saturday, November 12, 2011; 10 AM – 3 PM. After choosing from a selection of flowers and plants associated with the Christmas season, students will select their choice of paper and then receive step-by-step instruction about how to draw and paint their specimen using gouache and colored pencils. Finished designs can be used as gifts or holiday cards. Limit: 12. Cost: $50, art supplies included. Location: Val’s studio cottage in Mobile, AL.
  • Draw & Paint the Kitchen Garden – Weekly Studio Class (see schedule below). This is botanical art with a twist…combine seasonal fall garden subjects (fresh herbs, flowering plants, heirloom vegetables) with tools of the kitchen and garden world. Learn to draw the reflection on a platter, the folds of a tablecloth, the worn surface of an antique eggbeater or the transparency of a Mason jar. Choose your favorite medium (pencil, colored pencil, watercolor or gouache) each week and receive individual guidance. Supplies provided, no experience necessary. Class size limited.
