This month the featured resource is YOU!

During March, our focus will be on the comments and suggestions that came up during January while readers completed the Reader Survey.

Readers completing the survey provided helpful feedback. This month I want to take some time to cultivate the type of community resources readers are asking for on this site. While reading through the survey, it became clear that publishing a single announcement about what readers are asking for wouldn’t be enough to put into action the changes readers are requesting. A single announcement would have been pushed down below the fold and would’ve scrolled off the bottom of the page in only a few days. So let’s take some time with this.

Before we begin, I want to make a couple of announcements.

A quick comment about commenting. Some readers have told me they do not comment because they don’t want to use their real name. I understand this completely. Please know that when commenting, you only need to use your first name or enter a screen name. You do not need to enter your first and last name. Hopefully this makes you a little more comfortable. The community conversation readers are asking for can only happen if readers communicate with each other, so I hope you will consider participating in the conversation when you feel comfortable.

Beginning next week, I will begin to post topics in which readers have expressed an interest. If you would like to suggest a topic of your own, please suggest a topic for discussion or pose a question to peers by dropping a note in the
new Suggestion Box. I will compile a list of topics and questions and will post a new topic or question for discussion each week (or as topics/questions are submitted).

As this month progresses, I hope our conversations will establish the momentum to take us well beyond March and into a new era of learning here at ArtPlantae.

Classroom teachers, what would you like to ask artists?

Artists, what do you want to ask naturalists?

Naturalists, what do you want to ask fellow naturalists, artists and teachers?

MAM2012-Going-GreenerGong-500 ArtPlantae has received a Making A Mark Award by artist and writer Katherine Tyrrell, editor of Making A Mark, a blog about art for artists and art lovers. Katherine’s resource-rich blog is rated #3 out of the top 25 art blogs in the UK.

Katherine awarded ArtPlantae with The Going Greener Gong for 2012. This award is given to the art blog “most stimulating in relation to getting us in touch with nature and the environment.”

It is an honor to receive this award from Katherine and I appreciate her bringing attention to the site and the wonderful guests who have taught us so much.

Happy Holidays

Many years ago when ArtPlantae was in the earliest stages of being an idea and was literally one of those split-second thoughts that was always being displaced by other thoughts and responsibilities, I could not have imagined it in its current form. While technology has something to do with this, YOU have everything to do with this.

Everyday I am appreciative of your interest in this educational site and inspired by the guests and contributors who engage in conversation with readers and by those who generously share their knowledge, their classes and their projects with others. Thank you to each of you for making ArtPlantae such a welcoming gathering place for artists, naturalists and educators.

I wish for you all a relaxing holiday season and an inspiring 2013.

With much appreciation,

Tania

This year I have had the wonderful opportunity to meet ArtPlantae readers in person. From what they’ve told me, the Classes Near You section and the Exhibitions section are popular, as are the weekly teaching and learning column and conversations with featured artists like Coral Guest.

At the close of each year, I invite you to send information about classes and events you will offer during the coming year. This time I would like to extend this invitation again and add that the information you send is being read by a wide audience. So I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to send information about classes, exhibitions or special projects in which you are involved. Doing so is not only a great way to reach out to potential students, but is a great way to connect with other artists, naturalists and educators.

To make submitting information easier, I have gathered some instructions below:

    Classes Near You
If you teach and would like to let others know about an upcoming class or adventure to a far-away land, please send a quick note along with your information and I will create a listing on the appropriate state &/or country page and post an announcement.

To list your botanical art workshops, botany classes, book arts classes or sketchbook adventures, please send the information below to education@artplantae.com. When your information is posted, it is also pushed out to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

    Please submit:

    1. Your name
    2. The name of your class
    3. Date of your class
    4. Class times
    5. Location of your class
    6. A description of your class.
    7. Registration information or website where student can get all course details.

    Exhibition News
To announce an upcoming botanical art exhibition or an exhibition about a closely related subject, please send your information to education@artplantae.com. If you have a media image, please send this along a well. If the hosting museum, gallery or garden is handling all media requests, please point me in the right direction and I will contact them for information.

    Special Projects
Are you involved in a project that encourages an interest in plants? Share your news! Contact me at education@artplantae.com.

The annual ArtPlantae Reader Survey will be coming your way soon. So if you have thoughts to share, please save them for the survey. Your feedback is always welcome and appreciated.

Readers of this website have always provided helpful feedback, both within and outside of the surveys created to make this website and ArtPlantae’s educational activities as worthwhile as possible.

There are many ways to follow ArtPlantae and the number of people following through social media channels, RSS feeds, the Follow link below and through the email list have grown. So much so, that I feel it time to poll readers for feedback and comments.

Your feedback is invaluable and is always appreciated. Please consider taking a few moments to complete a quick Reader Survey. Thank you for your time.
