What can be accomplished by starting a wish list at ArtPlantae?

Lots!

  • Brides can create a list of gift items they and their significant others may need. This list can be given to shower guests and wedding guests.
  • Moms can create a reading list for a child’s personal library. This list can be shared with family and friends.
  • Teachers can create a list of books for their classroom. This list can be shared with parents.
  • New homeowners can create a wish list dedicated to the gardening books, home improvement books, and cooking books they need.
  • Businesses, groups and organizations can create a list of reference material they need for a library or a new office. This list can be shared with supporters, donors and others.
  • Dads can tell their families exactly what they want for Father’s Day.
    No more ties!

Book lovers have two new ways to read ebooks!

Readers can now use the IndieBound Reader for Android and the IndieBound Reader for iOS to shop for Google eBooks at ArtPlantae Books.

Readers no longer have to choose between reading digital and supporting independent bookstores like ArtPlantae Books. Google eBooks enables ArtPlantae Books to remain the store of choice for its audience of teachers, artists, and naturalists who are reading digital and utilizing technology in their classrooms and educational programs.

ArtPlantae’s large inventory of Google eBooks (and print books too!), also make ArtPlantae Books a practical choice for books about gardening, hiking, cycling, and other leisure time activities. Because Google eBooks work with many devices — tablets, smartphones, computers, even most e-ink devices — consumers are not bound to one retailer. This opens up a wealth of options to avid e-book readers.

During the food-filled Thanksgiving weekend, a few changes were implemented at the store. The search function operates a bit more smoothly and a new category system was created. All of this in response to customer feedback (thank you for your comments).

Now when you go to ArtPlantae Books, you will see a new section in the right-hand column called Discover More. This section contains links to titles in the following categories:

  • Drawing
  • Pen & Ink
  • Watercolor
  • Colored Pencil
  • Plants & You
  • Botany
  • Botanical Terminology
  • Natural History Art

These categories have been created to connect you to what you’re looking for in a fraction of the time. The titles in each category are only a sample of what is available, so I encourage you to use the search field to look for related titles. I will do my best to keep fresh titles circulating through this new section.

Inspiration for the Holidays

It is the diaries that speak the loudest in the empty library at night.

— Susan Snyder

Diarist, Susan Snyder, has compiled a moving and engrossing collection of diaries in Beyond Words: 200 Years of Illustrated Diaries. The featured diarists recorded their thoughts, secret wishes, To Do lists and illustrations in diaries they referred to as their “journals”, “field notes” and “logs”. The unknown writers provide an insider’s perspective of significant world events and invaluable insight into what nature looked like during their lifetimes.

Most of the diaries in this book are from the Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley where Snyder works as a librarian and researcher. The diaries in this book are not all by famous people, although you may recognize the products they created and the organizations they established. The featured diarists were (and are) travelers, mothers, inventors, explorers, naturalists, children, poets and soldiers — including a 16 year-old soldier of the Mexican-American War whose interest in botany was greater than his interest in fighting.

In Beyond Words, you will find journals written between 1776 and 1981. With each turn of the page, years pass, journal pages become less fragile, penmanship becomes more modern, and advances in technology (think typewriter) and advances in photography become evident.

Each 24″-wide, two-page spread allows the reader to view each diarists’ words and illustration up close. These visual treats and the warm colors, eye-pleasing fonts and clean layout of each page create a soothing reading experience for readers.

Heyday Books has provided us an opportunity to view pages inside this wonderful new book. Click on the image to peek into the diaries of John Muir and others.

In Capturing the Essence: Techniques for Bird Artists, William T. Cooper shares the wisdom and insight that can only come from forty years of painting birds in the field. This book was written for bird artists, people thinking about painting birds, and those seeking insight into the artistic processes of wildlife artists.

Field sketches and finished paintings on every page complement Cooper’s written instruction. This book is divided into two parts. The first part addresses materials, field supplies and foundation principles such as tone, light, and shade, color, composition, and foreshortening. In Cooper’s section about bird anatomy, he teaches artists about the feather groups they must know to create quick sketches in the field. Cooper provides a visual for every point he makes and these invaluable visuals help artists see and think about situations they will encounter during their own studies.

Cooper designates five pages of his book to “Backgrounds and Extras” where he discusses the documentation of background scenes, plants, and prey items. This section is a look into his file cabinet. His illustrations of a plant, a lizard, a mouse, a katydid, and a dead honeyeater represent the type of reference images he creates. It is impossible to turn away from these pages without imagining what the rest of Cooper’s file cabinet might look like.

In the second part of his book, Cooper leads readers through the creation of three paintings — one in watercolor, one in acrylic and one in oil. In each instance, he lists the materials he used and describes how each painting was developed from a pencil sketch to a finished piece.

Capturing the Essence: Techniques for Bird Artists is a beautiful book. It is an inspiring how-to guide and collection of ornithological art. Cooper’s teachings about anatomy, combined with the insight he shares about sketching birds in the field and in flight, will turn anyone reading this book into a more knowledgeable observer of birds.
