From Audubon Announcement:
Founded in 1905, the National Audubon Society (NAS) is a national nonprofit conservation organization with 500,000 members and 500 local chapters throughout the Americas. Its mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats.
In November 2004, Audubon California (a state program of NAS) celebrated the opening of its groundbreaking Audubon Center at Debs Park in East Los Angeles. The state-of-the-art “green” building was the first commercial carbon-neutral building in the U.S. and operates entirely off the electric grid. It serves as an ideal gateway to the wonders of the wilderness that lie within Debs Park’s 282 acres. The Center has an annual operating budget of $755,000 and employs 5-7 full time and 3-5 part-time or temporary staff.
Located on the border of Highland Park and Montecito Heights between Dodger Stadium and South Pasadena, the Audubon Center at Debs Park is in close proximity to largely Latino urban neighborhoods. The Center is ideally situated to provide a unique and valuable community resource – open space in which local children and their families can experience nature first hand.
